Kajukenbo foundersKajukenbo is a mixed martial arts - a hybrid, so to speak. It combines the most useful aspects of four martial arts into one. It was founded in 1947 at Oahu, Hawaii, by a group of four men that called themselves the "Black Belt Society". This group consisted of black belts from various martial arts backgrounds who would meet to train and learn from each other. They eventually made a pact to combine their arts into a single form with a focus on realistic techniques for street fighting.

Thus was born a new, evolutionary and highly adaptive style of martial arts. Kajukebo combines the techniques of KA - Karate, JU - Judo and Jujitsu, KEN - Kenpo, and BO - Boxing, into one really "street tough" fighting style. Because of its effectiveness and logical approach, this unique martial arts style has become one of the world's most popular forms of self-defense.

fightersIts main philosophy is that every martial arts style has something to offer. If you accept that idea and train accordingly, you will become a well-rounded and very effective martial artist. The founders distanced Kajukenbo from impractical, flashy moves and acrobatics. Instead they opted for features like hard, fast strikes to vital points all over the body, take downs involving high impact throws and joint and limb breaking techniques. There are blocks and counter attacks to punches or kicks, and techniques on breaking holds and grabs. It also teaches defending against and disarmament of offensive weapons such as knives or clubs, and even guns.

Kajukenbo training is notoriously brutal. The goal is to be invincible on the street, so the training has to be realistic. Students spar with full contact. This eliminates the timid and those without commitment or perseverance. Those that remain develop into tough fighters with a reputation.

Kajukenbo PatchTraining workouts vary from school to school but there is a core of self-defense techniques at the heart of Kajukenbo that keeps schools styles similar, such as an emphasis cardio conditioning and functional strength. However, there is plenty of room for variation, given how different the four foundational styles of Kajukenbo are. It's impossible to fully incorporate everything and some specialization is inevitable. This openness tends to encourage schools to incorporate the best moves and techniques from other martial arts, such as Kung Fu or Aikido, into their training.

Ranking hierarchies vary widely from school to school. One common belt order is as follows: white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown (3 levels), student black, followed by the various degrees of black belt. Some schools have "in between" belts that feature a white or black stripe running down the center of the belt.
