   BRAZILIAN JUI-JITSU     BJJ Header

BJJ fightBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that is considered a modified version of modern day Japanese Judo and Ju Jutsu, with much more emphasis on grappling and ground fighting. This combat sport focuses on competition and gaining dominant positions, but is differentiated from Judo and Ju Jutsu by the absence of most of the rules that lead to the competitors having to break and restart from a standing position.

gracie familyIt began with the teachings of Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda, who immigrated to Brazil from Japan in 1914. Maeda taught many different people his techniques, including police officers and military officials. In 1917, he met an influential businessman named Gastão Gracie who helped him establish his martial arts school in Brazil. Gastão had several sons who later became students of the techniques taught by Maeda. The Gracie family continued to develop the system throughout the 20th century.

Today, there are a two well known methods of teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. They are the Gracie teachings and the Sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teachings. The Gracie instructions specialize in self defense, whereas the sport version is design for point competition and is the primary objective of all grappling tournaments.

Royce GracieBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu came to international prominence in the martial arts community in the 1990s, when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Royce Gracie won the first, second and fourth Ultimate Fighting Championships, which at the time were single elimination mixed martial arts tournaments. Royce fought against often much larger opponents who were practicing many other fighting styles, including boxing, shoot-fighting, karate, tae kwon do and wrestling.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses the belt system to indicate skill level or rank, however, competition plays a much more important role in advancement than most martial arts. A belt promotion may be given after success in a competition, particularly at the lower belt levels. A promotion might be awarded when a student can defeat most other students in his school of the same rank.

This competition for belt advancement is considered to be one of the key factors in maintaining the standards and integrity of all belt levels. Instructors also take the personality of the student and their behavior in and out of class into account, and may refuse to promote someone if they exhibit antisocial or destructive tendencies. martial arts divider 1
