AIKIDO
Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba. It combines his martial studies, with philosophy, and religious principles. Aikido is often loosely translated as "the Way of harmonious spirit."
Most aikido techniques are performed by "blending" with the motion of the attacker, rather than directly opposing the attack. The aikidoist redirects the attacker's momentum with various throws and joint locks. Aikido also incorporates dynamic training movements with weapons, and gets much of its technical structure from the art of swordsmanship. However aikido weapons training also include the spear, short staff, and bayonet.
Aikido teaches both the physical and mental aspects of training. Physical training is diverse, covering physical fitness, conditioning, and specific techniques. The mental training emphasizes the ability to relax the mind and body even under the stress of dangerous situations.The first thing new students learn in aikido is how to safely fall or roll. Basic techniques include both strikes, grabs, throws and pins. Advanced students study freestyle defense against opponents with weapons.One feature of aikido that attacks many enthusiasts, is training to
defend oneself against multiple attackers. This type training is a key part of advanced aikido and is required to achieve higher level ranks. This aspect of aikido has been made famous by Steven Seagal, perhaps the best known of all aikido practitioners.

Most aikido organizations use only white and black belts to distinguish rank, but some use various other color belts.
